Project history

Zöld Kör and two other conservational groups carried out a research project in 2009/2010 on both side of the border in Hajdú-Bihar and Bihor counties. The aim of this research prroject was to determine the present project’s main directions and activities. The mentioned HURO/0801/072 project description is available on the following link: http://www.zoldkor.net/hataron_atnyulo/HURO_projektleiras.html.

The close working relationship evolved during this earlier project between the cooperating organizations, and it was the foundation for furher project development.
That is how Zöld Kör’s employees got to know the Agua Crisius organization and its staff, which organization is managing the Körös area Natura 2000 sites in Romania.

Geographical areas of the project conservational activities (from north to south)

  • HANELEK - LENHELY: Natura 2000 sites triangled between Érmihályfalva / Valea lui Mihai (RO) – Érsemjén / Şimian (RO) – Nyírábrány (HU) settlements.

List of Natura 2000 and protected areas:
1) HUHN20031 Hanelek
2) ROSCI0020 Câmpia Careiului (from this extended area, only the swamp called Lenhely by Hanelek village and another area with Pasque Flower a little further close to Érsemjén town)

  • POCSAJI-GATE – DIÓSZEGI PASTURE: Natura 2000 and protected areas triangled between Pocsaj (HU) – Kismarja (HU) – Bihardiószeg / Dioşig (RO) villages

List of Natura 2000 and protected areas:
1) HUHN20010 Pocsaji-gate
2) ROSCI0068 Diosig

  • SEBES-KÖRÖS: Sebes-Kőrös river Natura 2000 areas (RO és (HU)
  • List of Natura 2000 and protected areas:

Venues of the environmental education and awareness raising camoaings

  • Hungarian side (8 settlements): Debrecen, Berettyóújfalu, Létavértes, Vámospércs, Nyíradony towns and 3 villages (Pocsaj, Kismarja and Nyírábrány)
  • Romanian side (8 settlements: Nagyvárad / Oradea, Bihar / Biharia, Margita / Marghita, Diószeg / Dioşig, Székelyhíd / Sâcueni, Értarcsa / Tacea, Érsemjén / Şimian, Érmihályfalva / Valea lui Mihai,

Aim of the project

Mapping the range of Natura 2000 indicator species.
Finding, surveying and mapping the range of Natura 2000 indicator species in the listed 3 borderline territories, which belong to the EU’s ecological web. Based on the conducted surveys and research reports, we put together a list of recommendations for the existing or planned maintenance plans. In the case of Lenhely, we also compile grass cutting regulation in cooperation with the local muunicipalities, affected landowners and farmers.

Organizing actions and activities (such as cleaning up illegal dumpsites on the Romanian side, removing invasive plants), which will eventually help to improve the quality of the chosen areas.

Installing and monitoring of bird protection devices.

Beyond the research and practical conservation, this project puts special emphasis on education and awarenness raising.
For educational purpose, through school presentations and street actions, we want to inform the locals about the natural values that surrround them, about the proper steps to be taken in order to protect these values.
The landowners and the farmers who work on Natura 2000 areas will be addressed and informed on farmer forums. Their questions about the protection of these lands and the opportunities and tasks which come with owning/managing Natura2000 areas, will be answered by phone, e-mail or personally through our newly set-up counselling service.

Planned elements of the project

RESEARCH (ZK: Hanelek – Lenhely; ZK – AC: Pocsaji-gate – Diószeg- pasture; AC: Sebes-Körös river)
Field research: a., inventory of Natura 2000 indicator species b., population survey/estimation of Natura 2000 species, Mapping the population of Natura 2000 species (GIS), Field biologists will compile one report (with photos) per each area by each species. These reports will include detailed land management recommendations for the owners/usesrs of the areas.
We calculated with 200 research days altogether (Zöld Kör: 120 research days, Aqua Crisius: 80 research days). Final research report(s) will be compiled by 6 areas, in 3 languages (hungarian, english and romanian).

Assisting conservational management tasks
(ZK: Hanelek – Lenhely; Pocsaji-gate – Diószeg- pasture; AC: Sebes-Körös river)
Writing recommendations by areas for the regulations of Natura 2000 sites’ maintenance, preservation. Where these regulations exist, we audit and update them, where these regulations are non-existent, we create the recommendations for the new regulations’ texts, paragraphs.

Beyond this, at Lenhely (Érmihályfalva), as a model project we create grass-cutting regulation for the local farmers (pasture owners and users)

Conservational activities, actions
Volunteer programs
With the earlier volunteer recruits accompanied by new civil helpers, we organize conservational actions and a multi-day camp for youths. The aim of these programs is to conserve and improve the natural conditions of these Natura 2000 sites.

One-day actions: a., ground squirrell population survey, b., placing out artifical nesting boxes for birds of prey, c., white stork population survey

During the conservational youth camp (10 days), the planned activities are: cutting out acacia and other invasive species, placing out nesting boxes, collecting trash, and other related tasks.

Tasks related to service procurement
a., remediation of illegal dump sites along the Körös river b., installing bird protection devices, such as nesting boxes, artificial nests, stork baskets.

Street campaigns, presentation in educational institutions
The introduction of Natura 2000 sites and the knowledge transfer among the adults in the border villages will be implemented on full-day street kiosk (in 5 Romanian and 5 Hungarian villages) with 3-4 helpers per occasion. Pieces of the kiosk are: tent, display tables, counselling corner, playground (for kids). We have the participants fill out questionnaire to measure the effectiveness of our campaign.

10-10 school presentations will be held in order to educate the youth on the affected area. The instrument we use on these presentation is a projector and a 45 minute thematic slide show.

Setting up Natura 2000 counselling service
We want to inform the landowners and land users of the natural values of their land and the proper management practices in order to protect those values. For distributing the information, we organize farmer forums (2-2 occasions). In these forums, we talk about the regulations, possible funding opportunities and we offer partnership to harmonize interests beetween agricultural production and natural conservation.
Helping the farmers effectively, we launch a counselling service. This service will offer help to the land owners and farmers in conservational issues via phone, e-mails or even personally.

Educational, communicational instruments of the project:

  • LEPORELLÓ per area pair (3 area pairs)
  • Website to communicate the project activities and the geographical area (project website)
  • Short documentary per area pairs (3 area pairs) 25-minute documentaries (3)

Closing event
As project closing, with a representative event we would like to present the results of the project and to talk about the further tasks. To this event, representatives of local municipalities in the borderline area, civil organizations, environmental and conservarional authorities, researchers will be invited.

Planned duration of the project:

12 months, from February 1st, 2012 until January 31st 2013.

Planned budget of the project (EURO)

95-98% of the project budget is non-refundable fund.

Fund and own contribution ratio per partner:

  • Lead partner : 67.184,- € (5%: 3.359,20 €)
  • Cross-border partner : 29.790,- € (2%: 595,80 €)
